The Week at a Glance
306 events evaluated. The big debates: Seven lanes, seven nulls on the biggest event of the week, and Which pick is the standout. 7 agents, 3 rounds, and some strong opinions.
What Each Agent Championed
Maya
Culture Vulture
- All Blacks vs. Springboks — An international rugby test at an NFL stadium is a one-off cultural event for this city whether or not it is arts.
- Our Town — Thornton Wilder in the round, priced at the source, which lifted the unpriced cap.
- Todd Marcus Quintet, John Coltrane 100th Birthday — Two working jazz musicians built around a real centennial, table-seated.
Jordan
Social Connector
- Glow Night — A partner-dance lesson first, then two rooms of DJs.
- Wine On The Water — Arrived with no summary; the source confirmed an R&B and neo-soul wine festival on the water.
- Bmore Vegan Block Party — Confirmed free at the source, fifth annual, live music and vendors.
Chris
Active Explorer
- Mueveton 5K and Health Expo — A real timed 5K plus Zumba, yoga and health screenings, free, in the city.
- All Blacks vs. Springboks — Pre-committed at 92 if a price and a kickoff landed.
- Run Club — A little over three miles with the brewery as the after, not the point.
Tanya
Budget Hacker
- Bmore Vegan Block Party — The exact thing the budget lane exists to find, hidden behind an empty summary until the source was checked.
- Defenders' Day parade — Free, confirmed, and the entry point to the standout weekend.
- Gallery reception with Paul W. Gillespie — The drinks and food are the free part, not a lure.
Marcus
Plan Ahead
- Crab Feast at Milkhouse Brewery — The only event in 306 rows with two urgency anchors: the ticket page says these sell out, and sales end Friday at noon.
Devin
Single Adult
- Cryptids & Cheers — Built for arriving alone, down to the organizer saving you a seat.
- Comedy Showcase at Max's Taphouse — Comedy seating faces the stage, not an empty chair.
- MAX LVL Chess Club — The format pairs you with a stranger by design.
Yvonne
Seasoned Local
- Janet Echelman: Radical Softness — A real start time, a published end time, a lecture-hall seat, and over by 6:30.
- Defenders' Day at Fort McHenry — The Saturday sequence, a 7:00 concert, an 8:00 flag-raising recreation and fireworks at 8:01, is the closest thing to a seated evening a free civic event has produced all issue.
- Todd Marcus Quintet, John Coltrane 100th Birthday — Checked hardest because it is her venue.
Where They Disagreed
Seven lanes, seven nulls on the biggest event of the week
I handed the rugby test to whichever lane owns big one-off happenings. Nobody did. That is the Labor Day pattern again.
Resolution: Every persona scored the rugby test, Defenders' Day, the Seafood Festival, Made in Maryland and Reisterstown in Round 2. New rule, merged from three proposals: a stadium-scale, civic or festival event gets a named reader-level score from every lane in Round 1, and a silent pass is not a pass.
Which pick is the standout
A Meetup RSVP is an access gate. That is Devin's own rule from August 27, and it disqualifies Cryptids & Cheers from the standout, not from the Top Picks.
Resolution: Six different nominations collapsed to one. Four lanes arrived at Defenders' Day independently: free Friday parade, Saturday concert, flag-raising and fireworks, on the actual anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore, with zero self-selection barrier.
Tear Keeper, five acts for zero dollars
Five acts for zero dollars was a cost argument wearing a merit costume. My own rule failed in the opposite direction from the one it was written to fix.
Resolution: The two personas swapped sides in Round 2. In Round 3 the venue page showed no cover, so both applied the unpriced cap. It prints in After Dark with the cover listed as not published.
The Miles Davis concert that was an exhibition
I fact-check price and time reflexively. I had never fact-checked the word concert. An unverified adjective anchored my Top Pick for a full round.
Resolution: The venue's page describes a visual-arts exhibition running September 12 to October 18, with the evening of the 12th as its opening. It prints in Culture Corner as an exhibition opening. New rule: format claims get the same source verification as price and time.
Monday was never empty
Nothing qualifies for my lane and Monday is thin are not the same sentence. And my own sleeper pick was on Monday all along, filed a day late.
Resolution: The Echelman talk moved to its correct Monday date and became the day's anchor, alongside a free half-hour stand-up showcase. New rule: date verification checks the source's date, never the feed's own day-of-week consistency.
